Unity State launches Pakur resettlement site as flood devastate areas

Unity State Governor, Riek Bim  has officially launched the Pakur resettlement site, one of the areas recently reclaimed from devastating floods that displaced thousands in the state.

According to the governor’s office, the inauguration marked a major milestone in the state’s efforts to reclaim land submerged by flooding and provide durable solutions for displaced families.

“This launch is a symbol of hope and the first major success in reclaiming land lost to flooding,” Governor Bim said in a statement and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with partners to deliver long-term solutions for affected communities.

According state from  the  Authorities, the area covering an estimated 5,000 square kilometers, is expected to host around 1,000 households with hope to reduce congestion in Rubkona town, where many displaced families have been sheltering.

According to a statement, the ceremony, held at Pakur on Thursday was attended by representatives from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and senior state government officials.

The statement from the governor’s office states that the new resettlement site, covering an estimated 5,000 square kilometers, is expected to host around 1,000 households. Authorities said the project will help reduce congestion in Rubkona town, where many displaced families have been sheltering.

Stella Abayomi, the Acting Head of Field Office for UNMISS, reaffirmed the mission’s support in working with the state to meet the urgent needs of affected populations. “UNMISS is committed to strengthening partnerships for the delivery of humanitarian services to those most in need,” Abayomi said in a statement.

Officials noted that the Pakur site will also facilitate the gradual return of stability and improve access to land for farming and settlement as water levels continue to recede. The Pakur resettlement initiative is part of broader recovery efforts aimed at restoring livelihoods and enhancing resilience in flood-affected regions of Unity State.
