The South Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International corporation has yesterday confirmed the release of 27 South Sudanese who were jailed in Ethiopia.
The Ministry’s Spokesperson, Amb. Apuk Ayuel Mayen, told journalists during the weekly media briefing on Thursday that the government had been engaging with the counterpart in order to release the jailed Youth.
“We have good news; the ministry has been engaging with the government of Ethiopia in regards of this 27 youth. They were actually jailed but now hey are released and they are waiting transportation back to the country” she emphasized.
Early this month, Ambassador Ayuel told Journalist that cattle herders from Eastern Equatoria, accidentally crossed the international border while armed and were subsequently arrested by Ethiopian authorities.
“These 27 youths from Eastern Equatoria accidentally crossed the international border. They were cattle herders and they were armed. And they faced detention on the other side,” Ambassador Ayuel told journalists.
According to the report, the herders, who are from Eastern Equatoria state, were detained in Muzan Prison after allegedly crossing into Ethiopia illegally.
The Ministry of had been pursuing the matter through diplomatic channels with the government of Ethiopia since their arrest.
Having a good history of bilateral relations, South Sudan and Ethiopia have focused on improving bilateral relations in terms of security. The Heads of State also emphasized the building of relations through public diplomacy and connect more strongly the people of both nations.
