Special court adjourns trials to Wednesday

By Yiep Joseph

The special court trying the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, and the seven co-accused regarding the Nasir incident has adjourned the session to Wednesday.

The pronouncement followed a lengthy presentation of the prosecution document from the investigator and prosecution team.

During the seventh session conducted on Monday, the investigator started with the presentations of prosecution documents.

Some of the documents include an autopsy report and death certificates linked to the Nasir incident, military administrative attachments, and others.

The technical prosecution document presented on Monday included a digital forensic report prepared in South Africa.

Arguments

The defense team, however, opposes some of the attachments, such as the digital crime report, citing that they were not in a procedural way.

In reply, the prosecution team cited the articles, making them applicable within the code of criminal procedures in the Republic of South Sudan.

After legal argument, the special court did not endorsed a digital forensic report prepared in South Africa, adding that it should be presented first by the expert since it was sealed.

After legal arguments between the prosecution team and the defense team, the judges endorsed most of the prosecution documents into the court record except a digital forensic report that need an expert or the author to first present.

The presiding judge, Dr. James Alala Deng, hence pronounced the session adjourned to Wednesday, 8 October 2025.

“The session is adjourned to the 8th after tomorrow at 9:30am,” Dr. Alala said.

The accused, including Dr. Riek Machar, Mr. Puot Kang Choi, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, Mr. Mam Pal Dhuor, Mr. Gatwich Lam Puoch, Brig. Gen. Camilo Gatmai Kel, Mr. Mading Riek Yak, and Mr. Dominic Gatrgok Riek of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army–In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), are alleged to have coordinated with the White Army in attacks on the Nasir barracks from 3 to 7 March 2025.
