South Sudan has reaffirmed it’s commitment to advancing water security, promoting climate resilience, and enhancing regional cooperation as the country joins global experts at the 8th Cairo Water Week.
This year’s 5-day summit in Cairo, Egypt commenced on October 12, 2025 through October 16, 2025 under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Climate Resilience and Water Sustainability.”
According to a statement from the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the National Minister, James Mawich Makuach, led a high-level delegation of senior officials from the Ministry to participate in the international forum on Saturday.
“South Sudan’s presence at Cairo Water Week 2025 shows our strong commitment to water sustainability, climate resilience, and global cooperation.” the Ministry’s press unit stated.
In the statement, the Ministry emphasized that water resource management is a cornerstone of South Sudan’s national development agenda, aligning with the country’s strategic goals on climate adaptation, rural development, and public health.
The statement further noted that at the Cairo summit, Minister Mawich will engage in high-level discussions on transboundary water governance, climate-smart infrastructure, and financing for water and sanitation projects.
“We’re here to share experiences, learn, and build partnerships to deliver safe water and climate-resilient services,” the Ministry stated in a statement.
The Ministry’s statement noted that South Sudan’s attendance demonstrates the country’s continued engagement in regional and international cooperation on water and sanitation, particularly within the framework of the Nile Basin.
“We remain committed to working closely with neighboring countries and global partners to ensure water sustainability and climate resilience for all,” the statement added.
The Cairo Water Week brings together ministers, policymakers, scientists, and development partners from across the world to explore innovative approaches to water management amid the growing impacts of climate change.
The event also serves as a platform to translate global commitments such as those made during the UN 2023 Water Conference into actionable strategies for countries like South Sudan.
The event serves as a key platform for South Sudan to strengthen its partnerships, share experiences, and mobilize technical and financial support toward achieving national and regional water security goals.
South Sudan’s delegation was warmly received by Eng. Sameh Abdelrahman, Head of the Central Department in the Nile Water Sector, and Eng. Amgad, General Director for Forecasting in the Nile Water Sector.
