The South Sudan government, and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in particular, should use necessary means to achieve peaceful disarmament.
As this country experiences instability in some parts of the areas due to the spread of arms among the communities, there is a need for peaceful disarmament.
This process should focus on creating comprehensive awareness on importance of disbarment in every society.
It has to outline clearly the procedures of disarmament with hope to ensure that it is comprehensive and transparent.
There have been several attempts to disarm the population across the country; however, such initiatives do not yield fruit or achieve their objective due to a series of interferences.
In order to ensure that there is stability in the area, there is a need to focus on engaging community leaders in a peaceful manner in order to influence the youth to drop their guns.
Peaceful disarmament remains vital to solve the ongoing conflict between communities where armed conflict and raids have become common among the youth.
While the youth in some of the areas continue to arm themselves in the name of self-protection, such activities should be discouraged when the government reaffirms their commitment toward protection.
This can be achieved through removing guns from the hands of civilians and the youth all over the country to avoid retaliation and revenge killings.
Although it is very hard to achieve disarmament in the whole country, the government should first disarm the crime hotspot areas and later continue with other areas.
The process should be done in a transparent manner that includes tightening security at the state borders to protect the flow of weapons between armed criminals across communities.
In addition, the government must ensure that all military personnel cease siding with their communities while those involved are punished through the law.
So for South Sudan to end further integration due to communal conflict or continuous violence, there is an urgent need to focus on sincere, comprehensive, and peaceful disarmament.
