SSPDF officers, civilians urged to uphold truth, human rights

The Director of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces’ Directorate of Child Protection has urged both military officers and civilians to uphold truth, accountability, and respect for human rights in their daily conduct.
Speaking exclusively to this outlet, Maj. Gen. Chaplain Khamis Edward emphasized that the protection of children and other vulnerable groups must be a collective responsibility shared by all citizens, including members of the armed forces.
“Protection of children is a duty of everybody in the SSPDF because they are our future leaders,” he said adding, “Not only children, but any human being who is vulnerable needs protection. It is our duty as SSPDF to protect human rights in our country.”
He further called on officers to strictly adhere to both national and international humanitarian laws and ensure that violations are met with appropriate disciplinary action.
“Let us make respect for human rights a national priority. We must use our knowledge to ensure that anyone who needs protection can get it,” he urged.
Maj. Gen. Khamis also appealed to the public to share only verified information when reporting cases of abuse or misconduct, warning that false allegations could undermine public confidence in state institutions.
“When you report false information, you are working against your own government. Let us work together to clean our image as a country,” he added.
He confirmed that the SSPDF continues to enforce disciplinary measures against officers implicated in conflict-related sexual violence, with suspects referred to the Directorate of Military Justice for investigation and prosecution.
“We referred them to the director of military justice who forms an investigation committee and ensures accountability,” Maj. Gen. Khamis said, signaling the army’s commitment to internal oversight and reform.
The renewed call reflects ongoing efforts within the SSPDF to align its operations with international humanitarian standards and strengthen public trust in the country’s security institutions.
