The relief and rehabilitation Commission in Jonglei State has reported about 500 households to have been displaced by the recent flooding in Bor County.
According to RRC director, the most flood-affected areas include: Pagook, Pane-deng Kut, Mayual, Thoony among other areas in Baidit Payam.
Speaking to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper, the relief and rehabilitation Commission Director, Hon. Madiing Akueth stated that the magnitude of the water has risen from the Nile and that has led to the displacement of the residents along the Nile.
“ the report we have is that about 500 households have been displaced- we are told that the volume of water has risen and in the next 3-4 days, the water will submerge the entire areas.’’ Madiing said
Mading stated that the joint assessment team led by International Organisation for Migration IOM has been dispatched to conduct relevant assessment to the displaced residents on Thursday in Badit Payam this week.
Mr. Kueth added that the flood affected residents have been displaced to schools, high grounds and others have moved to Bor town for refuge.
“the assessment team led by IOM went today to assess the areas and when they come back, we will be able to understand much greatly when the assessment team comes. From there, we will be able to see how we shall respond. he stated.
RRC Boss appealed to Humanitarian Partners such as IOM to help assist with excavating Machines to help put up the dyke along the Nile in order to safeguard the water flow.
Meanwhile, Madol Kuol, a resident of Pagook Village in Baidit Payam emphasised that the volume of water has increased and it’s overwhelmed most of the homes’ dyke.
“It’s worse within this two days, most of the houses have been submerged- the small ordinary dykes that were erected at homes have been overcome by the flood water. We are calling for the support, most of the residents couldn’t make it to resist the flood. If we are given plastic sheet, then it can be good.’’ Kuol said.
Mr. Kuol cited that the situation of the displaced residents remains dire and he therefore called for urgent response from humanitarian Partners as well as Jonglei State government.
This is a second time Nile water overflowed this year with several level of destructions and displacements in Bor County and other parts of Jonglei.
