SSFA and Qatar Revitalize Strategic Football Partnership in Doha

By Kei Emmanuel Duku

South Sudan’s ambitions for footballing elite status received a massive boost in the Gulf as the nation’s football leadership inked a sweeping development deal with the world-renowned Qatar Football Association. The agreement marks the formal beginning of a technical revolution intended to modernize every tier of the South Sudanese game.

A new era of technical excellence and international cooperation officially dawned over the week in Doha as the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) secured a comprehensive strategic partnership with the Qatar Football Association (QFA).

The landmark agreement, signed by SSFF President Francis Amin and QFA President Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buainain, represents a significant step towards enhancing football development in South Sudan.

The high-profile signing ceremony, conducted in the Qatari capital, was witnessed by Lily Martin Mangil, the South Sudanese Ambassador to Qatar, signaling the diplomatic and cultural weight of the accord.

This agreement revitalizes a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) originally established in 2020. Far more than a mere formality, the renewed pact aims for intensive capacity building across various aspects of football, including administration, national teams, media, sports and data analysis, and medicine.

“This partnership is a landmark moment for us,” stated Amin, expressing profound optimism during the ceremony. “The provisions outlined in the agreement will be implemented swiftly, ensuring our athletes receive the support they need to thrive on both local and international stages.”

The memorandum encompasses crucial areas such as tournament organization, media relations, sports analysis, and data analytics—all designed to elevate the standards of football within South Sudan. By targeting these specific sectors, the collaboration aims not only to enhance the skills of athletes but also to improve overall governance in the sport.

Reinforcing Qatar’s commitment to the project, Al-Buainain highlighted the importance of cross-national partnerships in sports. “Investing in football development is investing in the future of young athletes,” he remarked. “We are committed to supporting South Sudan in its journey towards greater football excellence.”

According to official statements released by the South Sudan Football Federation, the agreement signals a promising future for the nation’s football landscape. As South Sudan continues to build its football infrastructure, this partnership with Qatar could pave the way for increased opportunities and visibility on the global football stage.

The renewed collaboration between the South Sudan and Qatar Football Associations marks a vital turning point in the growth of football in South Sudan, with expectations of broad benefits for its athletes and the sport as a whole.

The relationship between the SSFF and the Qatar Football Association dates back to 2020, when the initial Memorandum of Understanding was first drafted to foster sports diplomacy between the two nations.

While 2019 COVID-19 global pandemic slowed the initial implementation of the MOU, this 2025 revitalization in Doha introduces specific modern technical requirements such as data analytics and sports medicine reflecting the SSFF’s current drive toward professionalization and international competitiveness.
