Gov’t condemns killing of UNMISS staff

The South Sudan government has on Saturday condemned the Killing of a United Nation Mission in South Sudan staff in Wau, Western Bahr El Ghazal state.

In a press statement released by the Ministry of foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, commended the South Sudan People Defence Force (SSPDF) Division (V) commander to quickly apprehend the suspects.

This followed the killing of Bai Rhoch Mayol Koul, a South Sudanese who was serving the UNMISS as Language Assistant on 15 December 2025.

“The Ministry unequivocally and categorically condemned this heinous crime killing of UNMISS and humanitarian staffs” the statement partly read.

The Ministry on behalf of the Government expressed deepest condolence to the family of the deceased and the UNMISS.

“Any attack against personnel serving with UNMISS or international organizations is unacceptable and constitutes a grave violation of the laws of the Republic of South Sudan” the statement read.

The Ministry of foreign affairs affirmed the government full commitment to accountability.

“The government is taking decisive steps to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law, in this regard” the statement partly read.

It also reiterated the government commitment to working with UNMISS in all issues related to this unfortunate and tragic incidences.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), on 19th, December, 2025 strongly condemned the killing.

They revealed that the staff member was reportedly detained by security actor since 15th, December, 2025 during time the Mission was engaging with relevant authorities to locate and ensure his safe release.

The Mission underscored the team was deeply saddened by this heinous act and extended its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague. Such killing of United Nations personnel is unacceptable. We call for an immediate and thorough investigation to understand the circumstances of his detention and subsequent death” the statement read.

UNMISS emphasized that to ensure those responsible were held to account, it was imperative that the safety and security of United Nations personnel was respected.
