The Commissioner of Lainya County, Robert Lasu John Morris, over the weekend officially inaugurated the 2nd Bishop’s Annual Youth Tournament 2026, ushering in a ten-day celebration of talent and reconciliation at the Lainya Freedom Square.
The tournament, organized by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Yei, is being held under the theme: “Let the youth be Agents of peace and unity.”The event, which runs from January 10 to 19, 2026, features a diverse range of activities aimed at fostering social cohesion among the younger generation.
In a statement issued by the Lainya County Press Unit, the Commissioner emphasized that the tournament serves as more than just a sporting competition; it is a vital platform for youth empowerment and regional stability.
“Today, we celebrate the energy, creativity, and potential of our youth,” Robert Lasu John Morris told the gathered crowd during the opening ceremony. “I encourage all participants to uphold the values of sportsmanship and teamwork. Let this field be a place where friendships are forged and where our differences are set aside for the common goal of peace.”
The atmosphere at Freedom Square was electric as teams arrived from across the various counties of Central Equatoria. Spectators cheered as the Commissioner performed the ceremonial kick-off, signalling the start of a series of matches and cultural showcases designed to highlight the skills of the region’s youth.
“Sports is a universal language,” the Commissioner added in remarks captured by the County Press Unit. “Through this tournament, we are not just looking for champions on the pitch, but for champions of peace in our communities.”
The 2026 edition has seen an increase in participation, bringing together youth from across the counties of Central Equatoria to showcase their talents and skills. Organizers noted that the event will continue to feature various activities beyond football, including cultural performances and peace-building workshops, until its conclusion on January 19.
The 2nd Bishop’s Annual Youth Tournament builds on the success of the inaugural event held in 2025. The first tournament was established by the Catholic Diocese of Yei as a response to the need for trauma healing and social integration among youth following years of instability in the region.
The 2025 maiden edition focused heavily on local teams within Yei and Lainya. However, following its success in reducing local tensions and discovering untapped athletic talent, the 2026 tournament was expanded to include participants from across Central Equatoria. The first tournament was credited with creating a “peace corridor” through sports, a legacy that Hon. Robert Lasu John Morris and the Catholic Diocese hope to cement with this years expanded program.
