Refugees Urge leaders to Hold Dialogue Before Elections

By Jurugo Emmanuel Ogasto

Residents of Nyumanzi Refugee Settlement in Uganda have appealed to President Salva Kiir Mayardit to engage in dialogue with signatories to South Sudan’s 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement before the country holds  this year elections.
In an exclusive interview with No.1 Citizen Daily Newspaper yesterday, some of the refugees said inclusive dialogue is necessary to address unresolved political issues and prevent a return to conflict.
Deng Peter said holding elections without prior dialogue among political leaders could deepen divisions and threaten fragile peace.
“Dialogue should come first so that leaders agree on the way forward. Elections must be held in a peaceful and agreed environment,” he said.
Ayen Martha also emphasized the need for unity among the peace agreement signatories, saying refugees continue to suffer the consequences of political instability.
“As refugees, we are watching what is happening at home. If leaders talk and resolve their differences, it will help bring peace and allow people to return,” she said.
Dhew Mary urged the president and political leaders to prioritize peace and the interests of ordinary citizens over political competition.
She said meaningful dialogue would build confidence among citizens and create conditions for credible elections.
