The European Union’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Per Enar Enarsson, has emphasized that securing peace is a prerequisite for long-term investment and development in the country.
In the press statement seen on Tuesday following a meeting with the Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, Ambassador Enarsson underscored the EU’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s future through development, “We need to secure peace in order to be able to make the investments for the future of this country,”. He highlighted that the EU is prepared to support both the peace process and the nation’s infrastructure, specifically within the energy sector. Enarsson stated
During his first official visit to the Ministry of Energy and Dams in Juba, the Ambassador discussed concrete projects aimed at stabilizing the country’s power supply, “We discussed concrete projects in the energy sector, where the EU is ready to step in if security allows and if peace prevails,” Enarsson added.
He noted that building an energy-secure future is vital for the nation’s growth but reiterated that “peace remains the highest concern” for the people of South Sudan.
The Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, welcomed the new Ambassador and outlined the ministry’s strategic goals, “We discussed many issues, specifically focusing on the energy sector,” He briefed the Ambassador on current progress, confirming that the sector has begun the process of transmitting electricity from neighbouring Uganda.
The Minister detailed a two-tiered plan for the country’s energy development saying Expanding the transmission of electricity to Juba and surrounding areas for Constructing domestic hydroelectric dams to ensure a constant and independent electricity supply for all citizens.
Minister Makur expressed optimism following the meeting, noting that the Ambassador’s support for these initiatives is a positive sign for the future.
