The government has confirmed Rumbek Power Station commissioning and handing over on February 25, 2026.
The officials stated that the project will boost economic activity, improve social services, as well as enhance residents’ quality of life.
Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, made the announcement during a press briefing on Monday following a meeting with Lakes State Governor Madhang Majok Meen.
“I told him that maybe this month, 25th, we are going to open the power station of Lake State,” Makur said, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering electricity to Rumbek town.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, focused on finalizing logistical and ceremonial arrangements for the commissioning. Makur revealed that a high-level technical committee, led by Undersecretary Macham Angui, is completing the preparatory work.
Once concluded, the Minister will travel to Lakes State to preside over the opening ceremony, joined by Governor Majok and Hazem Mamdouh Fawzy, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to South Sudan.
Governor Majok welcomed the development, describing the power station as a turning point for Lakes State. He pledged full cooperation of the state government in the preparations and urged national authorities to extend electricity supply beyond Rumbek to all counties.
“We are fully ready and prepared for the opening and handover of the power station in Rumbek,” Majok said, adding that wider access to electricity would spur development activities across the state.
Both leaders emphasized that the project reflects strong collaboration between national and state institutions. They noted that such infrastructure investments are critical not only for economic growth but also for consolidating peace and stability.
The partnership between the SPLM and SPLM-IO under the Revitalised Peace Agreement was highlighted as a foundation for cooperative projects that directly benefit citizens.
The commissioning of the Rumbek Power Station is expected to mark a new chapter in service delivery, positioning Lakes State as a hub of economic opportunity and demonstrating how energy infrastructure can drive both development and peacebuilding in South Sudan.
