Youth embrace Peace, Unity through Football Tournament

By Chol D.Johnson
Youth have renewed calls for peace and unity, using football as a platform to foster solidarity and social cohesion among young people.
The appeal was made on Sunday during the first edition of the 2026 Legend Tournament held in Sharikat, an initiative organized by young people to celebrate veteran players while promoting harmony through sport.
Speaking at the event, Akuei Kuir of Sharikat FC said football remains a powerful unifying force that transcends tribal and ethnic divisions.
“Football unites youth in South Sudan and beyond, regardless of tribe or race,” he said, emphasizing the role of sport in building bridges across communities.
Kuir noted that the tournament was also designed to mentor young football enthusiasts by instilling discipline, teamwork, and technical skills. He commended the organizers for honoring him as a guest during the final match.
The competition brought together several local legend teams in a display of sportsmanship and mutual respect. Migration Legend FC emerged as champions after defeating Yahude Legend FC in a penalty shootout during a closely contested final.
Paul, captain of Migration Legend FC, praised the young organizers for initiating what he described as a meaningful unity-driven event.
“I appreciate the young people who organized this wonderful tournament for the legends. It is a strong demonstration of unity,” he said.
He acknowledged the intensity of the competition, noting that the small-sided format made the matches physically demanding and highly competitive. He encouraged organizers to continue using sports as a vehicle for peacebuilding and youth engagement.
Chapos Tor of Yahude Legend FC also lauded the initiative, stating that such activities should be held regularly to strengthen unity and contribute to national development through sport.
“Losing is part of the game. What matters most is not the trophy, but the enjoyment and unity demonstrated during the tournament,” he said.
Organizers and participants expressed optimism that similar sporting events will continue to provide constructive spaces for youth engagement, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence across South Sudan.
