ULTIMATUM : SSPDF Orders UNMISS, Civilians Out of Akobo

By Chol D. Johnson

The South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum for United Nations peacekeeping forces, NGOs, and civilians to vacate Akobo town.

The announcement came on Friday during a press conference in Giada Barack conducted by Lul Ruai, the SSPDF spokesperson where Dr. Pual Nang, Chief of Defence of the SSPDF, directed the withdrawal of UNMISS personnel and humanitarian staff.

The SSPDF spokesperson Lul Ruai said the orders are intended to prevent collateral damage during ongoing military operations.

“Orders for closure and immediate withdrawal of UNMISS forces from their temporary base in Akobo town, Akobo County, have been given with a 72-hour deadline,” Lul stated.

He added that all NGOs and their staff, as well as civilians in Akobo town and nearby villages, are required to either relocate to SSPDF-controlled areas or move to safer locations.

Lul explained that the ultimatum coincides with the second phase of Operation enduring Peace, a military campaign aimed at recapturing territories previously lost to SPLA-IO forces.

The first phase reportedly succeeded in retaking bases in Pieri, Motot, Walgak, Padoi, Bong, and Laken. “Akobo remains the final target for this operation,” Lul said.

The SSPDF emphasized that the advance notice is meant to safeguard civilians and humanitarian personnel from harm during military manoeuvres.

Akobo County, located in Northern Jonglei and bordering Ethiopia, has historically hosted SPLA-IO forces, and the region has a significant civilian population.
