The Commissioner of Aweil North County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has been served with suspension letter following allegations that he sold a vehicle belonging to the county hospital.
The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Charles Madut Akol, issued the suspension on Thursday morning through a letter from the Office of the Governor.
“The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, H.E. Gen. Charles Madut Akol, has issued Gubernatorial Order No. 1/2026 for the indefinite suspension of Aweil North County Commissioner, Hon. Deng Kuel Kuel, for the following reasons: Insubordination Lack of respect for the highest authority,” the letter reads in part.
The governor has also issued a directive appointing a temporary replacement.
“The Executive Director shall act as County Commissioner of Aweil North County until the above-mentioned issues are resolved,” the order states.
Local residents in the county have voiced concerns over the situation. One anonymous youth claimed that the embattled commissioner has been at loggerheads with state officials, including teachers.
“He has arrested three teachers, and the other issue is related to the ambulance that he has allegedly sold,” he said.
The Executive Director, Wiik Awan Tem, will serve as Acting Commissioner until the resolution of the local dispute between the suspended commissioner and residents in the remote border county.
It remains to be seen whether the commissioner will respond to the concerns raised by local residents and seek to resolve the issues with the state authorities over allegations of malpractice, including the alleged sale of public assets and the arrest of civil servants such as teachers.
