As the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) mourns the passing of Nicholas “Fink” Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan, his legacy stretches far beyond the Nile.
From the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa to the fragile peace efforts of South Sudan, Haysom’s life was marked by diplomacy, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to Justice.
Appointed in January 2021, Mr. Haysom brought to South Sudan decades of distinguished service across Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and New York. A seasoned mediator, diplomat, and constitutional expert, he was widely respected for his ability to navigate some of the world’s most complex political landscapes.
His enduring influence is felt not only in the halls of the UN but the lives of the nations he helped guide.
His tenure at UNMISS was marked by a steadfast conviction that the international community must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of South Sudan in their journey of nation-building.
In a statement paying tribute to Haysom, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described him as a “tireless peacemaker and steadfast champion of the values of the United Nations.”
Guterres added: “Mr. Haysom devoted his life to justice, dialogue, and reconciliation from his central role in South Africa’s democratic transition to years of leadership in UN posts in some of the world’s most fragile settings.”
Born and educated in South Africa, Haysom’s ideals were shaped by his early years as an anti-apartheid activist and lawyer defending human rights.
His lifelong passion for justice fueled his dedication to democracy and the rule of law, values he carried into every assignment. In South Sudan, he consistently emphasized that the will of the people must be the fulcrum upon which the nation shapes its political destiny.
In a tribute to Haysom, the African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said: “Mr. Haysom was not only a distinguished diplomat, but a trusted partner and a dear friend.”
“From his service alongside President Nelson Mandela in the founding years of democratic South Africa, to his tireless efforts for peace in our region and beyond, his career was defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, dialogue, and human dignity,” the Au’s statement read.
Colleagues recall his humility, patience, and belief in dialogue even in the most challenging moments. His principled leadership inspired UNMISS peacekeepers, South Sudanese communities, and countless others across the globe.
As Guterres noted, “The legacy of Nicholas Haysom will endure in the peace processes he advanced, the institutions he strengthened, and the principles he helped bring to life around the world.”
“His memory will remain a beacon of hope for all who continue the struggle for peace and justice,” UNMISS concluded in a tribute to Haysom.
