Government Security Committee Probes Jebel Iraq Massacre

By Alan Clement

The Central Equatoria State government has launched an investigation into the Jebel Iraq attack that left scores of people dead.

Speaking to the media during a site visit of the killings to conduct fact-finding and assess the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, Information Minister Nyarsuk Patrick, said Governor Emmanuel Adil tasked the State Security committee with gathering evidence and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.

The high-level delegation led by the State Security Advisor included State Minister of Information, the State Minister of Commerce and Industry, and the Commissioner of Juba County

According to Minister Nyarsuk, assault claimed several lives, including 24 civilians and 12 soldiers with ten other injuries reported including seven civilians and three soldiers currently receiving treatment at Juba Military Hospital.

He condemned the killings as a violation of human rights and confirmed that preliminary findings point to SPLA-IO forces as responsible for the assault. “It is really very sad that our innocent citizens are losing their life in such a way,” he said, urging citizens to remain calm while investigations continue.

Commissioner Emmanuel Tete described the attack as “barbaric” and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized that many of those killed were South Sudanese miners working in the area.

“This is a violation to the peace agreement and also a violation to human rights,” he said, calling on citizens to give the government space to investigate and bring the attackers to justice.

The officials revealed that nine of the attackers were killed during clashes with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), including the leader of the group. They said the assailants not only attacked but also attempted to loot, leading to a confrontation with government forces.

The state government has pledged to strengthen mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in the future. “We are going to continue with the investigation and making sure that the proprietors are brought into justice, and this incident should not happen again,” Minister Patrick stated.

The delegation’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to accountability and security in Central Equatoria State. As investigations proceed, officials have appealed for calm and patience, assuring citizens that justice will be pursued and measures taken to safeguard communities against further violence.
