Officials from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have visited Yei River County and begun efforts to restore Radio Miraya FM.
This key public broadcaster went off air following the mission’s withdrawal from its local base.
During a meeting with the County Commissioner, Samuel Henry Malimbo, and other stakeholders, UNMISS technicians were deployed to repair and reconnect the station, which has long served as a vital source of information for communities across the area.
Local authorities say the return of the station is expected to improve access to reliable news and public information at a time when communication gaps remain a concern.
Commissioner Malimbo welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention. He also acknowledged UNMISS for what he called its sustained support to the county despite the absence of a permanent operational base in Yei.
At the same time, the commissioner appealed for further assistance, particularly in strengthening rule-of-law institutions. He cited the need for rehabilitation of the judiciary office and improvements to police infrastructure across the county.
A UNMISS representative, Atta Bengani, said the restoration of Radio Miraya is part of the mission’s broader mandate to support peacebuilding and informed public engagement.
“Our priority is to ensure communities have access to accurate and timely information,” he said, adding that technical teams had been dispatched specifically to return the station to operation.
Bengani also indicated that plans for the construction of a judiciary office in Yei, as well as a police station in Mugwo, have already been proposed and are pending approval.
Although UNMISS no longer maintains a base in the area, the mission continues to conduct patrols in Yei River County, aiming to reinforce security and maintain engagement with local communities.
Observers note that the restoration of communication services and potential investment in justice infrastructure could play a significant role in rebuilding public trust and supporting long-term stability in the region.
