The Government of South Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the long-standing Abyei issue following a high-level meeting between national officials and a United Nations envoy.
The High Committee for the final status of Abyei, chaired by Minister of East African Community Affairs Piang Deng Kuol, met in Juba on Sunday with Guang Cong, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the discussions focused on the current political and security situation in the Abyei Area, as well as challenges affecting stability in the region.
Both sides exchanged views on ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in Abyei, stressing the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.
The talks come amid persistent tensions and unresolved questions over the final status of the oil-rich territory, which remains disputed between South Sudan and Sudan.
The UN envoy Guang Cong emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between the United Nations and the Government of South Sudan, expressing readiness to work closely with authorities to advance efforts toward resolving the Abyei issue.
The Abyei dispute has remained unresolved for years, with continued efforts by both national and international stakeholders to achieve a lasting settlement for the communities living in the area.
The High Committee reiterated its commitment to engaging regional and international partners to ensure a peaceful and durable solution for the people of Abyei.
