President Salva Kiir Mayardit returned to Juba on Wednesday after concluding official visits to Djibouti and Uganda aimed at strengthening South Sudan’s diplomatic and regional relations.
During the visits, President Kiir attended the inauguration ceremonies of Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh and Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
He also held bilateral talks with regional leaders on issues of peace, security, trade, and economic cooperation.
According to a statement from the Office of the President, the visits were important in promoting regional unity and addressing common challenges facing East African countries, including insecurity, economic development, and cross-border cooperation.
“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit returned to Juba on Wednesday morning following official visits to Djibouti and Uganda, where he attended the inauguration ceremonies of President Ismail Omar Guelleh and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” the statement read.
The presidency said discussions during the visits focused on strengthening regional cooperation, promoting peace and stability, and enhancing diplomatic and economic partnerships within the Horn of Africa and the East African Community.
Government officials noted that the engagements reflected South Sudan’s commitment to working closely with neighboring countries to foster peaceful coexistence, political dialogue, and regional integration.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace and stability across the region amid ongoing political and security challenges.
Upon arrival at Juba International Airport, President Kiir was received by senior government officials, members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), and supporters who gathered in large numbers to welcome him home.
Traditional dancers and supporters waving national flags filled the airport with chants of solidarity and support as the country moves toward the December 2026 elections.
Supporters described the president’s regional engagements as important in maintaining strong diplomatic ties and advancing peace efforts in South Sudan and the wider region.
President Kiir has continued to engage neighboring countries in efforts aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and promoting lasting peace ahead of the elections.
