Police in Gogrial East County have detained a 12-year-old girl following the death of another teenager after a fight in Ajugo Payam over the weekend.

According to Gogrial East County Police Inspector Madut Madut Deng, the incident happened while the mothers of the two girls were away from home.

The officer said the suspect, identified as Atong Monytong, allegedly fought with 13-year-old Achok Aleu, leading to injuries that later resulted in the latter’s death.

“The report we are getting is that 13-year-old Achok was subdued by Atong Monytong, who is 13 years old as well,” Madut said. “They were separated, and the deceased reportedly went to her mother and complained of chest pain, saying the condition was worsening as she was feeling it in her chest.”

He added that the girl was rushed to a local clinic, where she died shortly after arrival.

“The mother rushed her to the local clinic, and she passed away immediately,” he stressed.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased may have developed complications from the physical struggle during the fight.

Madut said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death, adding that local chiefs have intervened to prevent tensions between the two families from escalating into wider community conflict.

He urged residents not to take the law into their own hands while authorities continue with investigations.

The police inspector also called on community leaders, chiefs, and elders to continue promoting peace and awareness among young people to prevent violence that could lead to tragic consequences.

He noted that quarrels and fights among children and teenagers can sometimes result in unexpected deaths if not addressed peacefully and responsibly.
