The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has announced two major developments aimed at strengthening preparations for upcoming elections, including securing US$6 million for civic and voter education and acquiring a permanent headquarters.
During a press briefing at the Commission’s headquarters, NEC Chairperson Abednego Akok said the funding will immediately support a nationwide voter education campaign across all ten states and the three administrative areas of South Sudan.
He described the financial support as a significant step forward in improving public awareness and participation in the electoral process, noting that civic education remains a critical component ahead of the polls.
“They gave us six million dollars for civic and voter education… These functions are very important,” Akok said.
In a second key announcement, the Commission confirmed it has fully completed the purchase of the AIDA Hotel, which will now serve as its permanent headquarters.
Akok described the acquisition as a historic milestone, saying the building will provide the institution with long-term stability in managing electoral processes.
“This is a big achievement for us… There is now a building for the Election Commission forever. It will exist for generations to come,” he said.
The NEC said the launch of civic and voter education will begin immediately across the country, with a focus on informing citizens about voting procedures, participation, and electoral responsibilities.
While welcoming the developments, the Commission cautioned that the remaining election preparations are highly time-sensitive. It urged continued government support to ensure the timely delivery of resources and the smooth execution of electoral activities.
The NEC also thanked the media for its role in disseminating information to the public, calling on journalists to help extend voter education messages to all communities.
