Teen allegedly kills elder brother over 1,000 SSP dispute in Yei

By James Innocent

Authorities in Yei River County are investigating the death of a young man who was allegedly stabbed to death by his younger brother following a dispute over 1,000 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP).

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Hai Peace, a residential area of Yei town, shocking residents and prompting renewed concerns about violence among young people.

According to local authorities, investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the killing and determine whether it was solely a domestic dispute or whether other factors, including gang-related activities or substance abuse, may have contributed.

Speaking to the media, Hai Peace Area Chief Kenyi Elisha said investigators are gathering evidence before reaching any conclusions.

“We are still conducting investigations to establish the exact cause of the incident. Anyone found responsible for criminal activities will be brought to justice,” Elisha said.

The victim’s father, David Wani, said he was preparing to listen to the evening news at around 6:00 p.m. when he received information that his younger son had allegedly stabbed his elder brother.

According to Wani, the dispute began when the younger brother reportedly asked for money to buy clothes. The elder brother instead demanded repayment of 1,000 SSP, which he claimed the younger sibling owed him, leading to an argument.

Wani said his elder son later entered the house to change clothes, but was allegedly attacked with a knife as he came back outside.

“I rushed him to the hospital, but he died before receiving treatment,” the grieving father said.

He described the incident as unimaginable, saying he had never expected such violence within his family. Wani added that he has been raising his children alone since their mother died several years ago.

An eyewitness, Lilias Galaka, said the victim suffered severe bleeding after the stabbing and appealed to community members to intervene quickly whenever they witness violent confrontations.

“There was a lot of bleeding after the stabbing. Community members should intervene quickly when they see people fighting with weapons because such situations can easily result in loss of life,” she said.

A local youth leader also condemned the incident, urging young people to resolve disagreements peacefully rather than resorting to violence.

“This incident has deeply saddened the family and the entire community of Yei. Such a tragedy is rare and should serve as a lesson on the importance of managing anger and resolving disputes peacefully,” he said.

Police have not released the identities of either the deceased or the suspect, citing ongoing investigations. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to establish the full facts before any legal action is taken.

The fatal incident has renewed calls from community leaders for stronger family support systems, conflict resolution initiatives, and youth engagement programs aimed at preventing violence in Yei River County.
