Man killed in alleged adultery dispute in El Mareem town

A man has been killed in El Mareem town in Sudan’s South Kordofan State following an alleged dispute over an adulterous relationship with another man’s wife, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as Magak Yai Lual, believed to be in his mid-30s, is currently in police custody in Majok-Yith-Thiou Municipal Council along the South Sudan-Sudan border after allegedly killing Lual Akol Mawein on Sunday, June 28.

Majok-Yith-Thiou Police Inspector Col. John Garang Deng Akok said the incident stemmed from a long-running dispute involving the deceased and the wife of the suspect’s brother.

“What happened on Sunday, June 28, is that a man identified as Magak Yai Lual killed the deceased, Lual Akol Mawein, whom he accused of taking full control of his brother’s wife. The deceased reportedly ignored repeated warnings to end the relationship,” Col. Deng said.

According to police, the deceased hailed from Korok Community in Aweil North County, while the suspect is from Malualkon Village in Aweil East County. Both are natives of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan.

The fatal incident occurred in El Mareem Town, South Kordofan State, prompting Sudanese authorities to hand over the case to their South Sudanese counterparts because all those involved are South Sudanese nationals.

Col. Deng said police have transferred the suspect and the woman at the centre of the dispute to Wanyjok for further investigations before the case proceeds to court.

“The woman’s husband remains in Malualkon. His brother confronted the deceased over his relationship with the woman and demanded that the matter be resolved. Unfortunately, the confrontation ended with the death of the man who was living with his brother’s wife,” he explained.

Police said investigations are continuing and the case will eventually be handled through the South Sudanese judicial system.

Col. Deng urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, saying disputes should always be resolved through legal channels.

“People need to exercise patience, especially in sensitive family matters such as adultery. Nobody is above the law, and justice should be left to the courts,” he said.

He added that Sudanese authorities requested South Sudan to prosecute the case, leading to the transfer of the suspects to Aweil East before they were taken to the state capital for legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Col. Deng confirmed receiving reports of a separate incident involving a fatal motorcycle accident in Majok-Yith-Thiou, allegedly caused by poor road conditions. However, he said police were still gathering details.

“I have not yet received the full report, but we are following up on the matter,” he said, while urging motorists and road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution.
