Independence means peace, let us embrace peace

Every year, South Sudanese celebrate Independence Day with pride and hope. Independence reminds us of the sacrifices made by our heroes and heroines who struggled for freedom and self-determination.

However, true independence is not only about raising the national flag or commemorating historical events.

It is also about living in peace, unity, and dignity. As we mark another anniversary of our nationhood, we must remember that independence has little meaning without lasting peace.

For many years, conflict has slowed our country’s progress. Thousands of families have been displaced, lives have been lost, and development has been delayed.

Despite these challenges, South Sudan still has an opportunity to build a brighter future. That future depends on the willingness of every citizen to embrace peace, reject violence, and work together for the common good.

Peace is not the responsibility of the government alone. Every South Sudanese has a role to play. Community leaders should encourage dialogue instead of division. Religious leaders should continue preaching forgiveness and reconciliation.

Young people should use their talents to promote unity rather than conflict. Women, who have long been the backbone of families and communities, should be fully involved in peacebuilding and decision-making.

Building good peace also means respecting one another regardless of tribe, religion, political affiliation, or region.

Our diversity should be celebrated as a source of strength rather than used to create mistrust and hatred. We all share one flag, one country, and one future. When we choose cooperation over confrontation, we create opportunities for education, investment, healthcare, and economic growth.

Development cannot flourish where there is insecurity. Investors are more likely to establish businesses in peaceful communities. Farmers can cultivate their land without fear, children can attend school regularly, and health workers can serve communities more effectively. Peace creates the foundation upon which every nation prospers.

As we celebrate our independence, let us reflect on the kind of country we want to leave for future generations. Our children deserve a nation where differences are resolved through dialogue, where justice prevails, and where every citizen enjoys equal opportunities to succeed.

Independence gave South Sudan the chance to determine its own destiny. It is now our collective responsibility to ensure that this freedom is strengthened by peace, unity, and mutual respect.

Let us stand together as one people, build good peace in our communities, and make our independence a lasting symbol of hope, progress, and national unity.
