A worsening hunger crisis has forced 10 of Lafon County’s 17 schools to close, while the number of people who have died from starvation has risen to eight, local authorities have confirmed.
Lafon County Commissioner Orupi David said the prolonged food shortage has pushed many families to flee their homes, leaving classrooms deserted as parents search for food and safety.
He said those who remain in the county are surviving mainly on wild fruits, warning that the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
The State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) confirmed the deaths following a joint humanitarian assessment conducted last week.
Deputy Chairperson Khadija Clement said the team witnessed the devastating effects of hunger firsthand, including the deaths of elderly people and children.
The commission warned that the food crisis has spread beyond Lafon to Torit, Greater Kapoeta, Ikwoto, and other parts of Eastern Equatoria, with drought and crop failure driving widespread food insecurity.
While Magwi County has not reported severe hunger, it is receiving people displaced from the worst-affected areas.
Humanitarian agencies and the State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission are assessing the crisis and preparing an appeal for urgent food assistance and nutrition support to prevent further loss of life.
