Western Equatoria moves to restore traditional funeral practices

By Ijoo Bosco

Traditional funeral practices are set to be restored across Western Equatoria State following an agreement bringing together the Azande Kingdom, government authorities, and religious institutions.

The agreement seeks to preserve cultural values and restore dignity to mourning and burial ceremonies by discouraging the use of DJs, loud sound systems, and dancing during funerals.

Community members are instead being encouraged to observe traditional customs and maintain the solemnity of funeral ceremonies as a sign of respect for the deceased and support for bereaved families.

The initiative is also aimed at strengthening the role of traditional institutions and religious leaders in preserving indigenous cultural practices and promoting responsible funeral observances across the state.

Authorities and community leaders say the move will help protect the cultural identity of Western Equatoria while ensuring funerals remain occasions for mourning, remembrance, and solidarity.
