The South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) has launched the inaugural South Sudan Women’s Premier League, bringing together 12 teams in a new competition aimed at strengthening women’s football and creating more opportunities for female players.
The league was officially launched in Juba, with the winner set to receive US$15,000, while the runner-up will take home US$5,000.
SSFF President Francis Amin Michael called on families and communities to support girls who choose to participate in football, saying their encouragement is important for the growth of women’s football in the country.
“Families and communities” should support girls participating in football, Amin urged.
He said greater support for female players would help create an environment where girls can develop their talents and pursue football competitively.
South Sudan Women Representative Suzan John said the new league would provide female footballers with valuable playing experience and help prepare them for regional and international competitions.
“The league will help female players gain experience and opportunities for regional and international competitions,” John said.
Women’s football in South Sudan has continued to develop through domestic competitions and the efforts of the SSFF to increase opportunities for female players. The launch of the Women’s Premier League marks a significant step toward establishing a structured national competition for women’s football.
With 12 teams participating in its first season, the league is expected to provide a platform for players to compete regularly, identify emerging talent, and strengthen the national pool of female footballers who could represent South Sudan in regional and international tournaments.
