Wajuma FC women’s captain Mary Atong says her team is confident of securing victory when they face Bentiu City in the opening match of the inaugural South Sudan Women’s Premier League on Sunday at Juba National Stadium.
Atong made the remarks during Wajuma FC’s preparations for their historic first league match, as seen in a press statement on Diva Sports, saying the team is gradually reaching full readiness after three training sessions.
“We are getting there. This is our third training, and I see that we are prepared for the Sunday game,” Atong said.
The captain said the players are focused on translating their preparations into a positive result when they take to the field against Bentiu City.
Atong also welcomed the launch of the Women’s Premier League, describing it as an important development for women’s football in South Sudan.
“I think it’s a good initiative that the federation has started, and I think it will prepare us for regional games,” she said.
The league is expected to provide more regular competitive football for women players and create a stronger pathway for players seeking opportunities at the regional level.
The launch also comes as South Sudan continues efforts to strengthen women’s football and increase opportunities for female players to compete in organised domestic competitions.
Atong urged parents and guardians to encourage girls who have an interest in football rather than preventing them from participating in the sport.
“They should let their girls play football because that’s where we free our minds,” she said.
She believes greater support from families can help more girls participate in football and develop their talents.
Despite being the first game of the new competition, Atong said Wajuma FC are not approaching the match simply to participate. The captain has set a clear target of victory.
“I’m expecting three points. Every team that is going to play their first game aspires to win three points, and we want the three points.”
She added, “I have the confidence that we are going to get the three points.”
Wajuma FC will face Bentiu City on Sunday at Juba National Stadium, with both sides looking to make a strong start to the inaugural South Sudan Women’s Premier League.
The opening fixture will mark a new chapter for women’s domestic football in the country as players and clubs compete for the league title and greater opportunities to represent South Sudan at the regional level.
