Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Program, Adut Salva Kiir, has called for potential support in developing water treatment plants in Juba and parts of the country.
According to the Envoy’s press unit, Adut’s call came after meeting with the president of the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) in South Korea to explore potential cooperation in water supply, sanitation, flood mitigation, hydropower development, and water infrastructure in South Sudan.
The press unit stated that their discussions focused on strengthening access to clean and safe water, with Adut Kiir expressing her ambition to establish partnerships that could extend water connections to at least 80 per cent of Juba’s population and expand access beyond the capital.
“The Senior Envoy also called for potential support in developing water treatment plants in Juba and other parts of the country, alongside investment in sewage treatment systems to address waterborne diseases and improve public health,” the statement partly read.
They also said on flood mitigation, Adut highlighted the need for sustainable solutions to protect communities, farmers, and agricultural production from recurring floods, which often displace people and destroy crops.
The meeting further explored opportunities for technical cooperation and the development of major water infrastructure, including dams.
“Adut Kiir expressed interest in unlocking South Sudan’s hydropower potential, particularly the ‘Fula Dam project,’ which she identified as an opportunity for further exploration in the country’s pursuit of energy development,” the statement continued.
She also emphasised the importance of institutional partnerships between South Korea and South Sudan, including exchange programs, scholarships, and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen local technical expertise.
According to the unit, K-water had experience in international water and infrastructure projects, including hydropower development in Pakistan and the Philippines, water supply in Indonesia, and digital twin technology in Saudi Arabia.
The engagement reflects efforts by the Office of the Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs to explore international partnerships that could support South Sudan’s water security, public health, agricultural resilience, and sustainable infrastructure development.
