Juba City Council shuts down roadside tea spot over illegal drugs

By Lodu William Odiya

Juba City Council has shut down a roadside tea spot allegedly used for selling and consuming illegal drugs during a crackdown on unauthorised structures in Hai Malakal.

The operation was conducted during a follow-up inspection along Konyokonyo under the council’s development plan, as city authorities intensified efforts to remove illegal roadside structures and address substance abuse in the capital.

The Deputy Mayor for Social Services, Wol Mathok Diing Wol, said illicit substances were seized and individuals suspected of involvement in the illegal activities were detained during the operation.

According to a statement to the media, the tea spot was discovered while authorities were inspecting roadside structures as part of efforts to improve urban order and public safety.

“During the crackdown on unauthorised roadside structures, illicit substances were seized, and individuals involved were detained as part of council efforts to tackle youth substance abuse and illegal alcohol in the city,” the statement said.

Wol reaffirmed the council’s commitment to enforcing public safety regulations, clearing unauthorised roadside structures, and protecting young people from the harmful effects of substance abuse.

He said the council would continue implementing measures aimed at improving the city’s environment while addressing activities that threaten public welfare.

The operation comes amid broader efforts by Juba City Council to regulate roadside businesses and ensure compliance with urban development plans.

Illegal roadside structures have been a concern for city authorities as they seek to improve sanitation, manage public spaces, and maintain order in commercial areas.

The council’s latest action also highlights growing concerns about the sale and consumption of illegal substances, particularly among young people.

Drug and alcohol abuse can contribute to health problems, crime, and social instability, raising concerns among communities and local authorities.

Residents and business operators are expected to comply with council regulations as enforcement activities continue across the capital.

The council has reiterated that its ongoing operations are intended to promote a safer, cleaner, and better-organised city while safeguarding the welfare of residents, especially young people.

Authorities have not disclosed the identities of those detained or provided further details about the substances seized during the inspection.
