EDITORIAL: Government must improve healthcare access for persons with disabilities

Access to healthcare is a fundamental right that should be enjoyed by every citizen, regardless of physical or mental ability. However, persons with disabilities continue to face barriers that prevent them from receiving timely and quality medical services. The government must take deliberate action to address these challenges.

In South Sudan, healthcare facilities should be accessible to persons with disabilities. Hospitals and health centres need appropriate infrastructure, including ramps, accessible toilets and facilities that accommodate people with different needs.

Medical workers should also receive training to provide respectful, inclusive and professional care.

The government must allocate sufficient resources to improve healthcare services for persons with disabilities, particularly those living in rural areas where medical facilities, trained personnel and essential medicines are often difficult to access.

Affordable treatment and rehabilitation services should be prioritised to ensure that no one is left behind because of disability or poverty.

Furthermore, persons with disabilities and their representative organisations should be involved in decisions concerning healthcare policies and service delivery. Their experiences can help authorities identify barriers and develop practical solutions.

Improving healthcare access for persons with disabilities is not an act of charity; it is a responsibility grounded in equality, dignity and human rights.

The government must turn its commitments into practical action by ensuring that health facilities are inclusive, affordable and accessible to all. Every citizen deserves the opportunity to live a healthy and dignified life.
