Political lobbyists in Jonglei state are yearning for South Sudan President to appoint deputy governor, saying it would fill leadership gap.
The proponents expressed that in absence of the governor, leadership vacuum arises, on who to act next, is a politicized.
The position of Jonglei State Deputy Governor became vacant after President Kiir relieved Atong Kuol Manyang from the post, on 10th March 2025, without replacement.
Atong was appointed as national minister of Trade Minister, while Jonglei state deputy governor’s seat remains empty.
According to the 2018 peace deal, Jonglei state governor’s seat belonged to Sudan South Opposition Alliance (SSOA) while deputy governor, to Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
However, the two parties agreed to swap the positions, with Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) appointing Dr. Riek Gai Kok, while the deputy governor’s seat dangles.
Meanwhile, James Makol, a political elite, urged the president to appoint the deputy governor from counties that have never held any top position in Jonglei state.
He noted that there are areas in Jonglei state, believed to be marginalized, hence it is high time they held top positions to ensure power balance.
Makol reiterated that as rampant flood shortage and other challenges face Jonglei state, there is need to ensure the president appointed strong hearted and solution driven leaders.
He appealed to those who feel marginalized, to remain patient and push for development in their areas.
Bol Deng Bol, executive director of INTREPID South Sudan, also voiced similar call for the President to fill the vacant post.
“While we acknowledge Governor Kok’s efforts, the deputy governor’s role is essential for effective governance,” Deng said.
Recently, South Sudan President Salva Kiir issued a decree appointed Riek Gai Kok as the new governor of Jonglei state.
During swearing-in ceremony at State House, Kiir directed the newly appointed governor to ensure peace and stability prevails in the volatile region.
