Authority in Maridi County of Western Equatoria has confirmed that one person was killed and several others injured in an ambushed on a pickup truck along the Juba-Maridi Road in Western Equatoria State.
According to Maridi County commissioner, the attack occurred near Mani’bu as a public vehicle traveling from Juba to Maridi came under heavy gunfire.
“They were ambushed around 5 am . The driver was shot dead, and several people sustained injuries. The attackers also set the vehicle and motorcycles on fire,” Alfred Miiri said.
The same armed group reportedly abducted several boda-boda riders in a separate attack shortly after, dragging them into the bush and setting their motorcycles ablaze.
The commissioner said security forces later rescued the situation and took the injured victims to Maridi Civil Hospital.
With the aim to rescue those abducted, the county authorities have sent forces to follow the criminals.
