Maj. Gen. John Lual has returned to Yei River County and vowed to maintain peace and stability.
He was recently reassigned as the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) commander for Greater Yei.
During his arrival in the area, marking his second chance to serve in Yei as area commander, Lual pledged to work closely with communities and local leaders to promote peace and stability.
Lual, who was promoted from Brigadier General to Major General in 2024 in recognition of his efforts to support peace initiatives in the area, said he is committed to fostering unity and security despite ongoing challenges such as road ambushes and abductions.“I am grateful for the warm welcome from community and religious leaders in Yei,” General Lual said during a public address.
“I will work hand-in-hand with local chiefs, government authorities, and community members to ensure lasting peace. The people of Yei have suffered enough and are tired of ongoing conflict.” he added.
Meanwhile, Yei River County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme welcomed General Lual’s return, noting his longstanding commitment to the people of Yei.
“We are pleased to see General Lual back home. He stood with us during difficult times,” Commissioner Seme stated.
“We call on the civilian population to remain calm. The government is committed to providing maximum protection for both lives and property” he added.
On the other hand, Community members echoed the need for improved security, especially along key roads and in remote payams.
“Yei continues to face serious security challenges, particularly in accessing certain areas,” said Mabe Moses, a concerned citizen.
“We hope the return of General Lual will lead to greater stability” he further added
General Lual’s return comes at a time when Yei remains a flashpoint in South Sudan’s fragile peace process.
The Local and international observers are watching closely to see whether his presence can help bridge gaps between communities and security forces.
Bishop Levi Marandulu of ECSS diocese of Yei urged all armed groups to respect the civil population especially those traveling on roads and even other areas.
He appealed to the government to protect the civilians and the humanitarian workers while carrying their duties.
