The Former Kenyan prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga has on Wednesday died of Cardiac arrest at the age of 80, in Indian city Kochi, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
According to the report, the late Odinga collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him shortly after the arrival.
In a statement issued Wednesday from Addis Ababa, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed profound sorrow at Odinga’s passing, underscoring he was a towering statesman and a steadfast champion of democracy, social justice, and African unity.
“His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent” the statement read.
“He inspired generations of leaders, including myself, and citizens alike through his courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of dialogue and democratic institutions” the statement read.
The statement underscored as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, late Odinga worked tirelessly to advance the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda.
It also stated thar Odinga was helping to lay the foundations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation.
“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa” the statement read.
Odinga, who served as Prime Minister of Kenya between 2008 and 2013, was a central figure in Kenya’s pro-democracy movement during the 1980s and 1990s and later became one of the continent’s most recognizable opposition leaders.
He ran for president five times, most recently in 2022, and remained an influential figure in both Kenyan and African politics.
In May 2022, the late Odinga on behalf of the African Union’s infrastructure commission, attended the inauguration ceremony of the Juba Freedom Bridge, insisting that the new bridge should contribute to economic development for the entire East Africa region.
A huge crowd celebrated the opening, hoping the new bridge would reduce traffic congestion to cross the Nile.
Earlier this year, Odinga contested for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission, pledging to advance continental integration, infrastructure development, and good governance.
Although he ultimately lost the race to Youssouf, his campaign was widely praised for its energy and vision.
Tributes had poured in from across Africa and beyond, with current and former leaders describing Odinga as a symbol of resilience and reform.
