Governor Riek Gai Kok has reaffirmed that security and lasting peace are central to Jonglei State’s development agenda as his administration steps up efforts to stabilize the state and advance economic recovery and democratic participation.
In a Christmas message issued on Tuesday through the State Minister of Information, Nyamar Lony Thichot, the governor said his administration’s “People’s First Agenda” is focused on restoring stability, strengthening public safety, and laying the groundwork for sustainable development across the state.
Governor Riek noted that Jonglei’s recovery, following years of communal violence, cattle raiding, and inter-clan conflict, remains a gradual process that requires collective responsibility from both the government and citizens.
He stressed that peace and security are prerequisites for development and cannot be achieved through state intervention alone.
“My administration has invested a lot into peace, infrastructure, agriculture and security, and we will continue to do so until we build a virile and robust economy in the state,” the governor said in a statement.
Jonglei has long been one of South Sudan’s most volatile states, with recurrent insecurity disrupting livelihoods, displacing communities, and constraining service delivery.
While recent peace initiatives by state and national authorities have helped ease tensions in some areas, authorities say sporadic violence and criminal activity remain a concern, particularly during festive periods when movement and social gatherings increase.
Against this background, the governor urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies in maintaining law and order. He called on communities to foster unity and mutual protection, describing communal cooperation as critical to sustaining recent gains in peace.
“I urge you all to be your brother’s keeper and be security conscious at this time,” he said, while encouraging citizens to demonstrate the hospitality and tolerance traditionally associated with Jonglei.
Beyond security, Governor Riek linked peace to economic recovery, citing agriculture and infrastructure as priority sectors under the “People’s First Agenda”.
He emphasized that continued investment in these areas is aimed at improving food security, stimulating local economies, and reducing reliance on humanitarian assistance.
The governor also appealed to citizens to prepare for the forthcoming general elections scheduled for 2026, urging them to actively participate in the democratic process by voting for candidates of their choice.
He emphasized that civic engagement is essential for accountable governance and long-term stability.
In his message, the Governor lauded the people of Jonglei for their continued support and patience, reiterating that rebuilding the state is an ongoing process requiring diligence and unity.
He expressed confidence that sustained peace, security, and citizen cooperation would position Jonglei as a model of recovery among South Sudan’s states.
He concluded by wishing residents a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace and development beyond the festive season.
