Bishop calls for evacuation of Ambororo Cattle Herders in Tore

By James Innocent

The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Yei, Rt. Rev. Levi Marandulu Yepete, on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Yei River County Commissioner, Emmanuel Taban Seme, during which he commended county authorities for their efforts to promote peace and stability, while raising concerns over security and agricultural disruptions in Tore Payam.

During the meeting, Bishop Yepete praised the commissioner and county leadership for what he described as sustained efforts toward political stability, peace, and unity in Yei River County.

The bishop also applauded Commissioner Seme for an outreach program conducted on December 30, 2025, which included visits to prison inmates, patients, and orphans, and concluded with a thanksgiving prayer at the commissioner’s residence.

He described the initiative as an example of servant leadership and compassion for vulnerable members of the community.

However, Bishop Yepete expressed serious concern over the continued presence of Ambororo cattle herders in Tore Payam, saying their stay has created fear among residents and interfered with farming activities.

He warned that failure to address the situation could undermine agricultural production and contribute to food insecurity in the area.

The bishop called on the county government to take urgent steps to evacuate the cattle herders from Tore Payam.

At the same time, he urged authorities to pursue a structured and inclusive dialogue between the cattle herders and host communities as a pathway toward reconciliation and lasting peace.

In response, Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme thanked the bishop for the visit and acknowledged the church’s role in peacebuilding and social cohesion within the county.

The commissioner reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and coexistence among communities in Yei River County.

He further said the county government plans to organize a dialogue bringing together cattle herders and host communities and pledged to take appropriate measures to address concerns related to the Ambororo cattle herders in Tore Payam.
