Traders Decry Growing Roadblocks on Kaya-Yei-Juba Highway

By James Innocent

Traders in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, have raised concerns over the increasing number of roadblocks along the Kaya-Yei-Juba Road, saying the situation is negatively affecting business operations and driving up the prices of goods.

The Chairperson of the Yei Chamber of Commerce, Luwate Justin, said the numerous checkpoints along the road are increasing transportation costs, particularly for small vehicles, as traders are required to pay multiple fees while transporting goods.

He explained that the additional costs are ultimately passed on to consumers, resulting in higher commodity prices in local markets.

Justin also cited a shortage of cash in local banks as another major challenge facing traders, noting that many business owners are unable to access sufficient funds to purchase goods from international markets.

He called on the government to protect and support local businesses, warning that continued overcharging along the roads could further worsen the economic hardship faced by citizens.

One trader, Iddi Peter, said transport costs from Yei to Juba have risen from 100,000 to over 150,000 South Sudanese Pounds within a matter of weeks due to the growing number of roadblocks.

Earlier, the National Minister of Trade and Industry, Atong Kuol Manyang, assured the business community in Yei that she would raise the issue of road challenges with the President so that appropriate measures could be taken.

She said the matter would also be presented before Parliament for discussion.

The traders spoke during exclusive interviews conducted in Yei.
