South Sudan, Canada Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Humanitarian Support

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Monday Semaya K. Kumba held a discussion with the Ambassador of Canada to South Sudan, Joanne Minns, focusing on strengthening cooperation in humanitarian assistance, peace, and stability in the country.

In a statement that was released by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs during their discussion acknowledged Canada’s continuous humanitarian support to vulnerable communities across South Sudan.

The minister expressed appreciation for Canada’s contribution in assisting people affected by conflict, displacement, and economic hardship.

Minister Semaya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting peace and security across the country, emphasizing that stability remains a key priority for national development.

He also stressed that the government is ready to continue working with international partners to support vulnerable populations and improve humanitarian conditions.

“Our government remains committed to ensuring peace and security for all citizens, while working closely with partners to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities,” Monday Semaya said.

The Canadian ambassador welcomed the government’s commitment to peace and reiterated Canada’s readiness to continue supporting South Sudan in its efforts to achieve long-term stability.

The ambassador noted that Canada remains committed to humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding, and development programs aimed at improving the lives of South Sudanese people.

She also encouraged the government to prioritize peace as the country prepares for future political processes, including the December elections.

“Peace must remain the number one priority. Sustaining peace and stability will create the right environment for credible elections and long-term development,” Joanne Minns said.

Both sides agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in humanitarian response, peacebuilding, and development initiatives to support stability and prosperity in South Sudan.

In a separate discussion the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation received a courtesy visit from Séamus P. Horgan, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of South Sudan, they discussed ways to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the Holy See and South Sudan and explored areas of mutual interest and cooperation.

Both sides also exchanged views on the general situation in the country and highlighted the important role of faith-based institutions in promoting peace, stability and social cohesion, they reaffirmed their commitment to continued engagement and constructive dialogue.

These meeting were all meeting to discuss the long suffering of the people of South Sudan and see how lasting peace can come back to the nation.
