Strengthening education at the grassroots is key to South Sudan’s future

Education remains the foundation upon which every prosperous nation is built. For South Sudan, where the majority of the population lives in rural communities, strengthening education at the grassroots is not merely an option; it is a national necessity.

While the government has made efforts to improve access to education since independence, much more needs to be done to ensure that children in villages and remote counties receive quality learning opportunities.

Across many parts of the country, schools continue to face serious challenges. Many learners study under trees or in temporary shelters due to a lack of permanent classrooms. Others walk long distances to attend school, discouraging attendance, especially among girls.

Inadequate teaching materials, a shortage of qualified teachers, and delayed payment of teachers’ salaries further undermine the quality of education.

The government of South Sudan should prioritise investment in grassroots education by constructing more schools in underserved communities, recruiting and training competent teachers, and ensuring that learning materials reach every classroom.

Education budgets should be protected and implemented transparently so that allocated resources directly benefit learners.

Equally important is improving the welfare of teachers. A motivated teacher is essential for quality education. Timely salaries, professional development opportunities, decent accommodation in rural areas, and incentives for serving in hard-to-reach locations would encourage more qualified educators to remain in the profession.

Communities also have a vital role to play. Parents should support their children’s education by ensuring regular school attendance and discouraging practices that lead to school dropouts, including early marriage and child labour.

Local leaders and community organisations should work hand in hand with government authorities to safeguard schools and promote a culture that values education.

Development partners and non-governmental organisations can complement government efforts, but the primary responsibility for providing quality education rests with the state. Sustainable progress can only be achieved when education becomes a central pillar of national development planning.

As South Sudan prepares for a more peaceful and prosperous future, investing in grassroots education will equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to nation-building. Every child, regardless of where they are born, deserves access to quality education.

Strengthening education at the grassroots is not simply about building schools—it is about building the future of South Sudan, one classroom, one teacher, and one student at a time.
