EDITORIAL: Government should ensure free and open political space

As South Sudan prepares for its long-awaited elections, the government must take deliberate steps to ensure a free and open political space for all citizens and political actors.

Democratic elections can only be credible when political parties, civil society organisations, the media, and ordinary citizens are allowed to freely express their views without fear of intimidation, harassment, or restrictions.

The promise of democracy is founded on the principles of participation, inclusion, and freedom of expression.

South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution guarantees these rights, and the Revitalised Peace Agreement emphasises the importance of political freedoms as a cornerstone for lasting peace and stability.

Therefore, creating a conducive political environment is not merely a legal obligation but also a national responsibility.

Political parties should be allowed to organise rallies, conduct campaigns, and engage with voters across the country without unnecessary obstacles.

Security institutions must remain impartial and provide equal protection to all political actors regardless of their affiliations.

Any perception of favouritism or discrimination risks undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

Similarly, journalists and media houses must be granted the freedom to report on political developments objectively and professionally.

A free press plays a critical role in informing citizens and holding leaders accountable. Restricting media coverage or intimidating journalists only weakens democratic institutions and fuels public mistrust.

Civil society organisations also have an important role in civic education, election monitoring, and promoting peaceful participation.

Their activities should be supported rather than constrained. An informed electorate is essential for meaningful democratic choice and national development.

Furthermore, the government should encourage constructive dialogue among political parties to reduce tensions and build consensus on key electoral issues.

Political competition should not be viewed as a threat but as an opportunity to strengthen democracy and national unity.

Leaders from all sides must commit themselves to peaceful campaigns and reject hate speech, violence, and divisive rhetoric.

The upcoming elections present South Sudan with a historic opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to democratic governance.

A free political space will not only enhance the credibility of the electoral process but also contribute to peace, stability, and national reconciliation.

The government must therefore act decisively to protect political freedoms, uphold the rule of law, and ensure equal opportunities for all political actors.

By doing so, it will send a strong message that South Sudan is ready to embrace democratic principles and build a future where every citizen’s voice matters.
