Jonglei, Warrap crowned champions at Inter-State independence Volleyball cup

By Sabri Dibaco

Jonglei State has been crowned champion of the inaugural Inter-State Independence Cup after defeating Lakes State 3–0 in the men’s final, while Warrap State emerged champions in the women’s category after beating Pibor 3–1.

The tournament, organised by the South Sudan Volleyball Federation (SSVF) with support from various partners, brought together volleyball teams from different states and administrative areas as part of efforts to promote sports, peace, and national unity.

Speaking during the final match on Sunday, Mary Ayen, Deputy Speaker of the Council of States and President of the South Sudan Volleyball Federation, said the country has talented volleyball players capable of competing at the Olympic Games if given adequate support and opportunities.

Ayen urged young people, government institutions, and other stakeholders to continue investing in sports, describing it as an important platform for promoting peace and unity across South Sudan.

“Let us encourage sports because it engages youth in peace and unity in all corners,” Ayen said.

She announced that Warrap State will host the second edition of the Inter-State Independence Cup and called on states and administrative areas that did not participate in the inaugural competition to join next year’s tournament.

Ayen also acknowledged the funding challenges affecting volleyball development in South Sudan but expressed optimism that the second edition would receive greater support and be more successful.

The Jonglei men’s team secured the championship after a remarkable turnaround against Lakes State. The team had suffered a 3–0 defeat to Lakes during the group stage but reversed the result in the final, winning by the same scoreline to lift the trophy.

In the women’s final, Warrap State defeated Pibor 3–1 to become the inaugural champions of the women’s competition.

The finals were attended by government officials, sports supporters and volleyball fans from various states and administrative areas.

The federation said the tournament is aimed at using sport to bring young people together, strengthen social cohesion, and promote peace and unity across the country.
