South Sudan reaffirms its commitment to health, education, and timely elections

The Vice President and Chairperson of the Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, met with the British Ambassador to South Sudan, David Ashley, to discuss key priorities in service delivery and preparations for the country’s general elections scheduled for December 2026.

In a press release that was issued on Thursday, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in the health and education sectors, where the United Kingdom remains one of South Sudan’s major development partners.

The discussions centred on increasing support for essential services and ensuring the timely disbursement of capitation grants to primary schools across the country.

According to the statement, Abdelbagi reiterated the government’s commitment to improving service delivery by increasing budget allocations to health and education.

He also emphasised the government’s determination to meet its co-financing obligations and ensure that capitation grants reach schools on time to support quality education.

The vice president highlighted ongoing preparations for the country’s general elections, scheduled for December 2026.

He revealed that the government is preparing to convene an inter-party dialogue aimed at fostering consensus and ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Abdelbagi stressed that there would be no further extension of the transitional period, reaffirming the government’s commitment to conducting elections as planned.

The meeting underscored the continued partnership between South Sudan and the United Kingdom in supporting development initiatives and promoting democratic governance in the country.
