EDITORIAL: Government must strengthen fight against drug abuse

State governments must strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse among young people, which poses a serious threat to public safety, community stability, and the future of the country.

The increasing concern over drug use among young people calls for urgent and coordinated action.

Substance abuse can contribute to violence, theft, and other criminal activities, while also damaging the health, education, and social lives of those affected.

However, drug use should be addressed through prevention, treatment, and law enforcement rather than stigma alone.

Authorities should invest in public awareness campaigns in schools, churches, communities, and youth centres to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

Parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community organisations must also play an active role in guiding young people towards responsible choices.

At the same time, security agencies should enforce laws against illegal drug trafficking and the distribution of dangerous substances.

Those who profit from exposing young people to drugs must be held accountable under the law.

However, enforcement alone cannot solve the problem. State governments should expand access to counselling, rehabilitation services, vocational training, and employment opportunities. Young people need practical alternatives that give them hope and a sense of purpose.

Community members should also cooperate with authorities by reporting suspected drug trafficking through lawful channels, without taking the law into their own hands.

Protecting young people from drug abuse requires sustained commitment, not occasional campaigns.

State governments must treat this challenge as a public safety and public health priority to help build safer communities and secure a better future for the next generation.
