The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the European Union (EU) have called for stronger political coordination and sustained cooperation to address growing peace and security challenges across the Horn of Africa, with South Sudan among the countries highlighted for continued attention.
In a statement that was released by IGAD yesterday, the call was made during the IGAD–EU Political and Security Committee meeting held in Djibouti, where IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary Mohamed Abdi Ware, speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, emphasised the need for closer collaboration between the two regional and international partners.
“In his opening remarks, Ware stressed the importance of advancing peace efforts in Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan, noting the need for coordinated approaches to address regional security concerns and promote lasting stability,” the statement partly read.
South Sudan was among the key countries mentioned during the discussions, highlighting the importance of continued regional and international engagement in supporting peace and security efforts.
Ware also called for stronger protection of civilians, improved humanitarian access and enhanced maritime security, particularly in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which remain important waterways for regional and international trade.
The meeting provided an opportunity for IGAD and the EU to reaffirm their commitment to working together in addressing challenges affecting peace, security and stability across the region.
The IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary underscored that sustained cooperation and political coordination are essential in responding to the region’s complex challenges and strengthening resilience among member states.
He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to maintaining close cooperation with the European Union in advancing peace initiatives and supporting efforts aimed at building a stable and secure Horn of Africa.
For South Sudan, continued regional cooperation remains an important part of broader efforts to address peace and security challenges and promote lasting stability.
