Minister calls for calm, says security remains calm in Unity State

By Yiep Joseph

The Minister of Information and Communication in Unity State, Nyakenya Johannes Keah, has urged the residents to stay calm, citing that the security remains stable.

In a statement to the media, the Minister claimed that the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) remain committed to maintaining stability in Unity State.

Her statement came at the time the members of the Sudan People Liberation Army in opposition (SPLA-IO) claimed to have captured a garrison in northern Unity State near the Sudanese border.

The minister acknowledged the attempt by the SPLA-IO to attack government military bases, which, according to her, were managed.

She claimed that the SSPDF forces repelled all the attacks by the SPLA-IO in Unity State; hence, the security remains stable.

“Yesterday at 9:00PM, on the 3rd of January, 2026, the IO forces attacked SSPDF in Ngol Garrison, north of Rubkona County, of which our gallant forces managed to repel them successfully.  Sequentially, this morning at 9:00 AM, the same IO forces took another expedition to attack the SSPDF forces in the DingDing garrison. Again, the SSPDF managed to dismantle the attacking forces, forcing them to flee deep into the far west of Rubkona,” she expressed.

The minister called on the members of the public to remain calm and supportive, citing that there is stability in the area.

“I, therefore, urge the public and the civilian to remain calm, as the situation is fully under control,” she said.

The minister expressed that the state government appreciated the members of the SSPDF for their commitment to maintaining peace in the state.

“The Ministry assures the public that calm has fully returned to Rubkona town and its environs. All security organs remain in firm control of the situation, and normal life is continuing uninterrupted. There is no threat to civilians’ public institutions or humanitarian operations,” she said.

The minister called on the residents to continue to cooperate with security forces in their duty to maintain peace and stability in the state and South Sudan at large.

Recently the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) claimed that its forces captured a strategic South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) garrison in northern Unity State near the Sudanese border.

The SPLA-IO posted on his social media page; however, the SSPDF did comment on the statement.
