The South Sudan business community has called on the governor of Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) to solve the cash crisis, citing that it is putting businesses on their knees.
The call followed the ongoing liquidity crisis where most banks operate without cash, the South Sudanese Pound (SSP).
This situation forced the government workers to suffer while their money has been paid into the banks and hard to withdraw.
The liquidity crisis has made it hard for the public to withdraw their money in the banks, hence subjecting them to suffering.
The business community welcomed the appointment of Johnny Ohisa Damian as the governor of the Bank of South Sudan and urged him to try his best to solve the problem of cash in the banks.
Last week President Salva Kiir dismissed Yeni Samuel Costa from his duties as the governor of the Bank of South Sudan and reappointed Johnny Ohisa Damian as the governor.
Addressing media over the weekend, Ayii Duang Ayii, the chairperson of South Sudan’s business community, welcomed the appointment of Johnny Ohisa Damian, citing that it will bring change in the economic sector.
“Our message as a business community to the newly appointed bank of South Sudan is to bring that money on the streets to commercial banks,” Ayii appealed.
Ayii called on the newly appointed governor of the Bank of South Sudan to sit down with the rest of the stakeholders and solve the issue of cash in the banks.
“We welcome the reappointment of Johnny Ohisa Damian as the governor of the Bank of South Sudan, and we call on him to solve the problem of cash. Our South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) new notes are on the street, but they are not there in commercial banks,” he added.
“All our money on streets brings them to commercial banks for the public to access and withdraw their hard-earned money,” he added.
He cited that lack of cash in the commercial bank has subjected members to suffering since they could not withdraw what they have in the bank whenever they needed money.
The business community leader added the shortage of cash has made it hard for the business community to purchase goods.
As such, Ayii appreciated President Salva Kiir in the process of looking for a solution in particular the appointment of Johnny Ohisa Damian as the governor of the Bank of South Sudan.
He added that the newly appointed governor will bring change and urged all the stakeholders to cooperate with him.
“I am calling on the bank governor to help the public. Most citizens have their money in the banks, but they cannot get it,” he said.
The business community leader reiterated his commitment to work hand in hand with the newly appointed governor in addressing economic challenges.
Ayii called on President Salva Kiir to continue with such a solution to ensure that the Ministry of Finance and other institutions get the right people to bring change to the economy of the country.
He called on the financial institution to cooperate with the business community toward getting solutions to the ongoing economic crisis.
Recently the business community urged the Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Bank of South Sudan to ask why there are SSP on streets and not in commercial banks.
The business body urged the financial institutions to resolve such crises and ensure that money goes back to the commercial banks.
