The Governor of Western Equatoria State, Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, has called on young people across the state to prioritize agriculture as a practical solution to hunger, poverty, and rising criminal activities.
In a statement by issued by the WES Governor’s press unit, during a Sunday service at St. Mary’s Church in Yambio, Governor Rimbasa emphasized that the ongoing rainy season presents a critical opportunity for youth to actively engage in farming.
“He specifically encouraged young men aged 17 and above to take farming seriously, citing crops such as maize as both a reliable source of food and income” the statement partly read.
He urged them to utilize available land and labor to cultivate crops that can sustain their livelihoods and support their education.
The governor highlighted agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy, noting that increased food production at the household level would not only reduce dependency but also strengthen food security across communities.
He warned against negative behaviours such as alcohol abuse and involvement in criminal activities, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
According to the governor, such actions undermine peace, disrupt community stability, and hinder development efforts in the state.
Governor Rimbasa further stressed the role of parents, guardians, and community leaders in shaping the future of young people. He called for stronger guidance, mentorship, and moral support to ensure that youth remain focused on productive activities
He noted that proceeds from agricultural activities can help young people meet their basic needs, including school fees and other personal expenses
On security, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and stability across Western Equatoria State. He pointed to improvements in several areas, including the Kupa–Nadiang road, which he said is now safe for movement following ongoing security efforts.
He also appealed to individuals still engaged in violence to lay down their weapons and embrace dialogue, stressing that peaceful coexistence is essential for sustainable development, improved education, and economic progress.
Governor Rimbasa concluded by urging unity among the people of Western Equatoria State, emphasizing that collective effort, discipline, and hard work are key to transforming the state into a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
